Title - Red Rosebuds
Pairing - Zayn/Harry
Summary - Don’t you know the rules of blind dates? You wear something, like this red rosebud, and your blind date will be too, so you can recognise each other, which is obvious when you think about it, idiot.
a/n - This was supposed to be my entry for Week 14 1dslashweekly, but alas it was not finished. Enjoy anyways…
“This is utterly stupid.”
Niall looked up from where he was going through Zayn’s cosmetics bag, throwing moisturiser and other strange powder-filled bottles and containers lazily around the room. Curiously he stared at Zayn, who was still checking himself over in the mirror, straightening his suit. Niall raised an eyebrow, dumping a small container of foundation on the Zayn’s bed.
“What was any of this stuff for anyway?” Niall asked, picking up a powder brush and stroking it gently against his nose, giggling as the bristles tickled him. Zayn frowned; turning around to see the mess Niall had created and sighed loudly.
“Niall! Concentrate for one second, please; I said, this is utterly stupid.” Zayn retorted, walking over to pick up his cosmetics. “And leave my stuff alone.”
“Why are you getting ready then?” Niall grinned, now with a stick of eyeliner and was drawing little smudge people on his arm. Zayn snatched the eyeliner away from Niall, rolling his eyes and taking away some moisturiser that Niall was starting to open to give his little stick figures hair. “I mean, if you think going on a blind date is stupid, then why are you?”
“Give me that!” Zayn ordered, taking the cosmetics bag away from Niall, and struggling to put everything back in.
“Fine. Don’t answer my question.” Niall teased, accidently spilling some powdery substance all over Zayn’s quilt. Niall’s blue eyes flicked up, going wide and he started to make a puppy-dog face before taking a look at Zayn’s stormy expression in and bolted out his room.
As the bedroom door shut behind Niall, crashing loudly (and earning a shout from Liam), Zayn dumped all the make-up on his bed and turned back to his full-length mirror. He tugged at his collar, making it sit properly. Niall was right; if this was that stupid then why on earth was Zayn so excited for this blind date?
“Are you sure this is the right place?”
Harry nudged Louis’ arm gently, and shifting slightly in the cold air. Louis nodded, head bobbing furiously. “Absolutely.” Louis agreed, pulling out a red rose bud, flourishing it with a flick of his wrist.
“What’s that?” Harry said, pointing towards the flower in Louis hand, which he couldn’t keep still in his excitement. Who knew sending people on blind dates with their crushes with could be so fun? Louis flicked Harry’s hand away, and putting the rosebud into Harry’s top buttonhole, fiddling with it for a few moments, until he stood back, head tilted. Lou tilted his head the other way and bestowed a giant smile.
“Perfect!” He decided and then looked at Harry strangely, “Do you not know the rules of blind dates?”
Harry grumbled for a second or too, since when did blind dates have rules? And since when did Louis become the master of all things blind dates? This was just something stupid, something a little fun and perhaps something good would come out of it…
“Well, idiot, how do you think you are going to recognise your blind date and hi– her recognise you?” Louis smiled, hoping that he smoothly covered over his fumble. When Harry just nodded and made that face that could only mean ‘seems legit’ Louis let an internal sigh of relief.
“Well, I guess that makes sense.” Harry said thoughtfully, “And she’ll be wearing a rosebud too?” Louis nodded, pulling Harry towards the restaurant.
“Yeah…” He said, stumbling a little as Harry caught up to him, and opening the glass doors to let Harry inside, “They’ll be wearing a red rosebud.”
Zayn tugged at his collar again, shifting nervously as he opened the door to the restaurant. The air was warm as it hit him, and Zayn wondered for a second if he was over dressed for this date.
“Zayn! Wait!” Liam called out, jogging over from the car. “Don’t forget this!” He held out a red rosebud and Zayn looked at it curiously, before realising the point of it and took it gently out of Liam’s hand. He put it into his top buttonhole and smiled broadly at Liam. “Your blind date will be wearing one too.”
“Okay.” Zayn replied and as Liam walked back to his car muttered under his breath, “But this is still completely ridiculous.”
“Operation Blind Date a-go-go, I repeat Operation a-go-go.”
Niall giggled furiously as Louis spoke into his hand, blurring his voice as if he was talking over a walkie-talkie and Liam glared at the both of them. Louis giggled too, and poked Niall roughly as their speakers crackled into life as a waiter asked “What table the gentleman was supposed to go to?”
“Shhh, I’ll listen to Harry’s mic, and you two listen to Zayn’s, okay?” Liam ordered sternly, scowling at the two chortling at each other in the back seat.
“Okay Lee-yum!” Niall agreed, and both he and Louis bunkered down, ears close to the speakers as they heard Zayn head towards the secluded table they had set up for the date.
Liam rolled his eyes and concentrated on his own speaker, listening to Harry’s nervous hum whilst waiting for his date to show up.
This plan was going to work, as long as Niall and Louis didn’t stuff it up.
Harry stared around at the people in the restaurant, eyes flickering around for the red rosebud. It seemed that every single person here tonight had decided to wear something red and made him jump every time he saw a flash of the bright colour.
Then suddenly, there it was, just a brief glance, but definitely a rosebud, and definitely red. And there, again – the rosebud! His date was here!
And the person wearing the rosebud was wearing a suit, like Harry was, and that didn’t make sense, unless Louis actually– oh, damn, Louis set him up with a guy. Typical Louis and his flamboyant nature, and Niall was probably behind this as well, because those two always did these crazy, stupid plans together.
Although they did work this out incredibly well, normally their plans failed because they giggled too much so that means Liam helped out too. Oh, god, did that mean that mean? No, they did not set him up on a date with–
“Harry? What are you doing here?”
“Hi, Zayn.” Harry smiled, a little nervously and his heart fluttered crazily in his chest. “Um, Louis set me up on this whole blind date thing and –” damn, Zayn looked hot in that suit, all classy and his hair, that quiff, did he spend hours on that? Oh, and it turns out that it was all just for him, boring, old Harry, what a pity.
“Niall and Liam set me up on a blind date too.” Zayn admitted, sitting down across from Harry, mainly to stop his legs from shaking, because no. Niall and Liam did just not set him on a date with Harry, oh, he was going to kill them. “And it seems that they were working with Louis.”
Harry laughed, and although it was nervous it just sounded wonderful to Zayn. “I guess they did. What a bunch of arseholes.”
“Well,” Zayn started, smiling at Harry in a way that made Harry’s knees want to buckle, “Seeing as they’ve set this all up for us why don’t we have a ‘date’ anyway.” Zayn suggested, a little flirtatiously, proud that he sounded a lot more confident than he actually felt, and Harry actually blushed.
“Uh, okay.” Harry smiled, passing over a menu to Zayn and their fingers lingered on his each other’s for a few moments. “That sounds good.” And they clinked their empty glasses together whilst Zayn made a hand to call a waiter over.
“What is that?” Niall whispered, tilting his head and looking at Louis who frowned and glanced up at Liam.
“You hearing anything interesting Li?” He asked, reaching out for Harry’s set speakers, comparing it to the noise coming out of Zayn’s.
“It’s the same noise.” Niall said, frowning because he had no idea what it was. Had the microphones malfunctioned? Were they dropped into water? Had the rosebuds not worked properly?
“Uh, lads?” Liam called out and Niall and Louis looked up at him, pulling away from the speakers. Wordlessly Liam pointed towards the main door of the restaurant, so Louis and Niall crowed forwards into the front seats of the car.
“Woohoo!” Louis screamed, and Niall whooped loudly, and they awkwardly tried to do victory dances in the car, falling all over each other. Liam grinned too, looking at his partners in crime and then back, to the restaurant doors, to Harry and Zayn; wrapped up in each other’s arms, lips pressed tightly together.
And although they looked very happy, Liam supposed that he did deserve being shot the finger.
